Tankless Water Installation

Did you realize that your hot water heater is the next largest energy employing equipment in your house? A standard 50-gallon electric water heater may cost around $520 per year at 10.6 cents per kWh.

These “tank” water heaters consume a lot of that energy maintaining the water heated when you’re not utilizing it, throwing away hundreds of dollars every year. Fortunately, there is a better solution available– tankless hot water heaters.

Tankless water heaters are fairly new to the US but have been utilized in Europe and Japan for decades. The idea is simple: the unit heats the water only when you need it. With regular maintenance and upkeep tankless water heaters will out perform and out last traditional water heaters by far.

Common Water Heater Problems

  • Water leaks may come from the temperature and pressure relief valve, plumbing connections, or from the tank itself. We’re a full-service plumbing company, fully qualified to perform leak repairs wherever they might happen to be.
  • Rust-colored water is the result of corrosion of a “sacrificial anode” intended to prevent tank corrosion, or the tank itself if the anode is no longer doing its job.
  • Bad-smelling hot water comes from tank sediment harboring the growth of bacteria inside the tank.
  • Rumbling or popping noises come from excessive sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank, or scale breaking off from the sides.

Trouble Shooting Basic Problems

If you have no hot water, check the pilot light and relight it if necessary. If it doesn’t stay lit there could be a faulty pilot light, a bad thermocouple (which senses that the pilot is lit), or broken control valve.

If you’re not getting enough hot water the problem could be a broken dip tube, a bad thermostat, a poorly adjusted burner, or a blockage of the flue.

Extra caution is always in order when gas DHW heaters are concerned. Leaking gas can actually explode, and burner or exhaust flue problems pose carbon monoxide hazards.

Electric Water Heaters

When you have no hot water that might just be a circuit breaker or fuse, so check that first. If that’s a no, you could have a failed thermostat, a tripped over-temperature protection, or a main heating element may have burned out.

If you’re experiencing inadequate hot water that could also be a thermostat problem or a burned out element.

Electric hot water heaters may experience leaks around the gaskets that seal the heating elements or unusual noises from scale building up on the elements.

New Federal Energy Efficiency Regulations For Water Heaters

New federal energy-efficiency regulations that took effect in April 2015 apply to all newly manufactured hot water heaters. For most people the end result is only a modest increase in size (due to additional insulation) and price. But for tank sizes above 55 gallons there are big changes.

Gas-fired units need a special high-efficiency “condensing” heat exchanger a substantial additional cost.

Even more extreme changes are in store for electric units. Resistance heating elements are no longer allowed. Heat must come from electric “heat-pump” technology, with a major increases in cost.

The regulations were designed so that the higher installation costs should be more than paid back in energy savings, but you still face that high up-front expense. Special financing may be available, and our experts will be more than happy to look into cost-saving and energy-saving options for you. We stay up to date and always know the right thing to do.
